Offline marketing to college students

Posted by Adverkid | January 8, 2009 .

College students can be a difficult market to target. Online marketing is obviously the way of choice and works the best; however let’s not forget that offline marketing methods still work if done correctly.

Here’s what Adverkid would consider when targeting college students:

1)Coupons, coupons and more coupons! College students are always looking to save money, be it for their next big fix (lol) or for parties and stuff. Any offer you give them must have a perceived value of a discount. The best way is to offer them a certain percentage off coupon. Something like a 30 to 40 percent off (even though you’ll end up increasing your price and then reducing it to the original price using the discount). Be nice though, college kids are smart!

2)Free usable gift vouchers. With purchase offer them a free movie ticket or a concession stand voucher (if your cinema supports them). They love going to the movies, so let them save their money. Your brand gets built too.

3)Make use of the campus newsletter. Advertise dead cheap in the campus newsletters. Not only will this help improve your brand (by making your company look good for helping out the college newsletter) It should convert well if you’ve got good ad copy.

4)Endorsements. Celebrities sell a product, that’s a fact! Find out which students are celebrities in their colleges. Im thinking college football team captains and cheerleaders. Use them wisely, get them to use your product for free and viral marketing should do the rest. Be sleek about it though, they’re students after all!

5)Unconventional media. Wouldn’t you talk about it to your college mates if you saw an ad in the restroom of the local deli near the campus? Target local hangout places and go “unconventional” crazy!

6)Be aware of what slang is used. Be in with the schizzle of college language and you’ll appeal more to them. Use these wisely in ur ad copy.
Oh and think outside the box, like big time!

They’re a hard market to target those college kids. They are always looking for ways to save money so I think coupons are a great way of advertising.
